Alexander Zverev became the first player on the ATP to hit 50 wins Wednesday in Basel. The 21-year-old German eased past Robin Haase 6-4, 7-5 in his opener at the indoor event.
Zverev, who is now 50-16 on the year, will face 19-year-old Aussie qualifier Alexei Popyrin tomorrow.
Romanian qualifier Marius Copil collected his first career Top 10 victory (was 0-6) upsetting Marin Cilic 7=5, 7-6(2).
Taylor Fritz also was a winner as was Stefanos Tsitsipas. And Ernests Gulbis toppled Jack Sock for a second straight week. The 18th-ranked Sock is just 7-20 on the year with 1,400 ranking points dropping in the next few weeks which could plunge him out of the Top 140.
On Thursday, 8-time champion Roger Federer returns to face Jan-Lennard Struff. The home favorite is 3-0 against the German.
Youngsters Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev are also in action.
