Tennis – New Zealand’s doubles specialist Michael Venus was on hand to witness the birth of his first child in London and says he was glad that he decided not to sit out the Asian swing to be home with his pregnant wife.
In an interview to the New Zealand Herald, Venus says, “It was something we spoke about for quite a while and one of those things where you want to be there but at the same time we weren’t sure when she was going to come.
So it would have been tough to sit at home for four weeks potentially and where we were in the race to London it added another spanner to the decision so I am just glad all things worked out perfectly for us there.” After losing in the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters, Venus says he boarded a flight to go home to be with his wife and received a text from his wife during the flight that she was going into labour.
“Three hours into the flight Sally texted me to say her waters had broke so she was on the way to the hospital and as soon as I landed I took an Uber to the hospital and I guess lucky for me and not for Sally, her labour was 26 hours so I still had plenty of time.” Venus and partner Raven Klaasen have qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals and will be making their team debut at the ATP season-ending event.
The duo has reached five ATP finals in their first season as a team, winning one of them – Marseille. Also Read – Guy Forget on Rafael Nadal Playing Paris .
