Dimitrov Returns To Round Of 16 In Melbourne | ATP Tour

Grigor Dimitrov reached the Round of 16 at the Australian Open for the fifth time on Friday, defeating Thomas Fabbiano 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4.

The 2017 semi-finalist (l. to Nadal) hit 37 winners and converted four of five break points to claim victory at Melbourne Arena after two hours and seven minutes. Dimitrov improves to 5-1 this season, following his run to the Brisbane International quarter-finals (l. to Nishikori) earlier this month.

Fabbiano was aiming to reach the Round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time. The 29-year-old Italian defeated Jason Kubler and Reilly Opelka to make his maiden appearance in the Australian Open third round.

Dimitrov will next face #NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe or Andreas Seppi for a place in the quarter-finals. The 20th seed owns a 1-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head series record against Tiafoe and has never met Seppi at tour-level.
